Conservancy and Group Ranch The Samburu People

Sasaab is situated in Westgate Community Conservancy of Ngutuk Ongiron Group Ranch (NOGR), in the Northern Frontier District of Kenya. The conservancy was established in 2004, it borders Samburu National Reserve to its south east, Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy to its east and Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust to the north.

The Westgate Community Conservancy (a member of the Northern Rangeland Trust) forms a crucial habitat for the endangered Grevy’s Zebra.

- Situated on a ridge,Sasaab overlooks the junction of the EwasoNyiro River and the Kipsinglugga (seasonal river). It provides an important wildlife corridor utilised by elephants, lions, leopard and other wildlife making it a great holiday destination.
  
  The landscape is rugged with plains and the Acacia woodland being interspersed by rocky outcrops and there are stunning views of Mount Kenya and the Matthew’s Range at the northern end of the conservancy.
  
  The Ngutuk Ongiron Group Ranch lies in the heart of Samburu Land. With an area of 82,000 acres, the ranch is home to approximately 3,500 people who share the land with their livestock and wildlife.

The Samburu are a proud tribe of cattle owning pastoralists, a section of the Maa-speaking people who rely on their cattle, sheep, camels and goats for their livelihoods.

They have strived to preserve much of their culture and are very proud to show their way of life to visitors, making a visit to this area an exceptional cultural experience.
